Pick n Mix @Woolworths, Laytonstone

This was my kind of performance.

It was not the most glamourous event as you can imagine from Woolworths (yeah it is the big chain shops that had went burst. They used to sell cheap stationaries, school clothes etc.). But in terms of the unusual space and also the audience group that may include lots of local people (look like lots of Asian?), I have found interesting.

The work, Catch,we are performing has been touring for more than 3 years so you may have seen it before, but in this site, the abstract work started having completely different meaning, which I found from the rehearsal.

It had been a great fun to adapt the movement in order to fit into the different shape of the space with some pillars that the viewers naturally read the relationship to the dancers.

Despite the hard floor and other lacking facilities, I love performing in this kind of space and more cusual settings.

And people...

From the conversation of Fearghus talking to the audience as introduction.

Furghus: Have you been to a real theatre?

Kids: Noooo.

A kid: Popcorn!!

It is not bad feeling to have an idea that we are influencing people.

I would love to have more of this kind of opportunities.

Documentation, score and creation

Last evening, I went to a seminar at London Metropolitan University.

---
Recording the Performance
Investigating Performance and its Documentation

-Is it possible to effectively and truthfully document the live performance?
-Is this process different for performance based research than for other performance?
-Can the work, as documented, stand alone without further academic writing to support it?
-What does the process of documentation reveal about the work?
-What are the ethical and legal implications?

---

Last May, I was part of Weave research project, which is part of this whole series of researches into documentation. I know 'documentation' is a large issue among academics in performing arts, and I don't know too much about it.

How I am related to the issue is; when I was finishing MA in 2002, I had to show the documentation of the process and also the final performance. There was a question about how I can document- writings, journal, video footage, drawings etc. Then I had a big struggle of translating what I have gone through into what other people would understand. It was a headache.

While I was listening to the presentations and discussion in the seminar, I have realised that this blog is also a documentation. A documentation of events and thoughts I have gone through.

By the way, Documentation is not equal to presentation. There are two kinds of documentation: one is to present my idea to someone. The other is to digest my experience and to go further from there. I see more potential in the latter. The idea agrees with a focus on the process rather than the product, which has lots to do with dance creation.

Deborah Hay, an American choreographer, makes written score as part of her dance practice. Move-write the score- move again- write the score again... the activitiy goes on and goes up like a spiral.

A British choreographer, Rosemary Butcher also uses a kind of score, but for her it tends to be pictures or drawings to start with then once you had a departure, your memory makes a score. The moments you remember are the source for next move, then new things come in, then you have another moments you remember... and the activity goes on and the moements remained get compressed and crystallised.

The potential and importance of documentation are so huge. I have been trying to find my own way of blogging but it is actually means my own way of documenting. It reminds me my old day when some one taught me how to take notes in classroom. It is like that. How you document really matters.

Dance improvisation blogs

I have been looking for a way,
- a way to explore my improvisation practice further
- a way to feel happy with my dance practice and myself
- a way to keep my interests in dance, movement, space and the body

After some internet-surfing, I have found these blogs:

dance improvisation practices
http://slightly.net/improv/

Daily Practice
http://dailypractice.wordpress.com/

It is fresh for me to see a couple of practitioners having conversations and deepening their thoughts through a blog. They are extremely open to let other people read and join in their thinking process. It is a real exploration into a matter without competitions of power, money or career.

My internet-surfing started in the confused state when I started looking at some pictures and video footage from Fragments. My own experience was profound during the creation and the performances. I have had so many discoveries on the construction of the narrative of the performance in relation to the original novel by Gogol, the architectural space in the family room at Clarence Mews, the installation by Jairo and Nicola and my own moving body. The process was like unfolding a secret that has been hiding under all the clutters of these objects. As repeating the improvisation performance, I started seeing "the truth" of this performance.

What I saw in still and moving images three weeks after the actual performance was very different. I was rather disappointed since I did not feel the images reflected my subjective narrative that I was so engaged to unfold.

I was also thinking the practicality of development and continuation of this project; looking for opportunities for funding and performance.

These two experiences of looking at a work from outside did not please me very much. I felt my mood getting low and low.

Then I ask myself "Why do I dance?"

When I started dancing, I enjoyed every single class I took. A class for 1.5 hour contained full of discoveries. I did not think where those classes would take me. I just enjoyed myself in the moment.

After 20 years (oh my god!), now I think a lot where my practices will take me and how my project can go further. And this is no fun.

I think my attitude now is no right. It does no good either.

Two blogs I mentioned at the beginning give some excitement to me. Yes I do enjoy the process of dance practice, rather than dance as product. And that's why I have been interested in improvisation these years. There are so much I can explore.

It is about the journey, not where I reach.

Fragments photos

いつもよりもintimacy(親近感?)

Merce Cunningham

Merce Cunningham, the revolutionary American choreographer, died 26th July at his home in Manhattan. He was 90.

I have been impressed and inspired by his thinking and his works now and then. Here are some words I have seen this time.

"For a dancer, dance is an adventure in time and space. A choreographer is an observer."

Mr. Cunningham often spoke and wrote movingly about the nature of dance and would laugh about its maddening impermanence. “You have to love dancing to stick to it,” he once wrote. “It gives you nothing back, no manuscripts to store away, no paintings to show on walls and maybe hang in museums, no poems to be printed and sold, nothing but that single fleeting moment when you feel alive.”

Original article
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/28/arts/dance/28cunningham.html?pagewanted=1&_r=2

What is dance?
Why do I dance?

These are the questions to be asked and to be explored, forever.

I went to The Place to take a class this morning and unexpectedly the teacher taught Cunningham technique. if I had known, I had not gone to the class but in fact it was nice to revisit Cunningham technique and think and feel what he has done.

What a coincidence.

Chance and Event.

Very important ideas that Cunningham introduced are relevant in everyday life beyond dance, and that's what fascinates me.

Probably, Merce Cunningham has influenced me more than I am aware of.
It is a huge loss for us.

InsideOutside3 rehearsal

Part of InsideOutside3,
we are creating Fragments
again.
We have done Fragments in three different places so far.
Everytime, we consider the space and the performance changed.
This time, the installation itself has changed its shape.
And it is going to be inside out.

I won't tell you any more.

On 22nd June, we have managed to hung most of the installation.

My performance does not exist yet.

Let the space and the installation tell their stories.
I will listen and respod to them.

I have a feeling that this is going to be very unique performance.
And hopefully I find some new ways of adding my existance that communicates to the audience.

Entrance to my running park
Hackney Downs
I run 20 minutes
to let stale air out
from my body

I used to teach PE in a college in Japan.
Body fat starts burning after 20 minutes of exercise.
I used to motivate young women not to give up moving by telling so.
I am not running to get slim.
And i cannot run any longer than 20 minutes.
It is not because I get out of breath. Because I get bored!
What are marathon runners thinking while running?

Something I like

Hummm... I definitely would like her to be my GP.
And also it maybe interesting to work with her as a choreographer or dancer. But I am not going to be interviewed!

If a GP (General Practitioner= local doctor, for readers outside UK) is interested in this kind of things, she would be interested in human. Some people are going to see a doctor because this hurts and this body part is uncomfortable... and some doctor would give just painkillers to sort out the problems. But the true nature of the body is not like that and there are deeper connections to other body parts and systems and also the mind... It is time-consuming to see a patient in the holistic way and this way definitely does not fit the respectable free-of-charge GP system in this country. I wonder how this GP would cope with her job and her real interest.
Same can be said with my job as Pilates teacher.
In addition, I have stomachache right now.

This kind of performance, I like.
I am interested in developing very original form of performance.

... I was too late to find this notice. The show was finished yesterday.

Goldfish memory

Vanishing Point by Rosemay Butcher

I took a week-long workshop with Rosemary Butcher (15th - 19th Dec). Rosemary was one of my choreography tutors when I was studying at Laban. It was seven years ago. It was the beginning of my new life in London. And her practice has influenced me a lot in a way to understand dance. In this workshop, I felt like coming back home. Here is what I believe in. It is so honest and sincere.

The film Vanishing Point shows her aesthetics and creative process very well. From loads of movement materials they had created in a studio, spending days and hours, from 9 hours shooting, they have created this 15 minutes long short film. The final work is so simple, no waste, and so powerful.

Here are so important things that I don't want to forget....

Simone Forti interview- Dance and music improvisation

I am thinking to develop the work with Ute after the improvisation performance we had last week.
Here is some hint what we can explore.
Simone also tells exactly how she works.
This may not be a right approach for us.
It's a big exploration itself to find a right way to approach.
Needs lots of hours in a studio...

I took a week long workshop with Simone Forti two years ago.
We went for a walk, write whatever comes up in mind without stopping, and 'perform' solo improvisation with movement and talking in front of peers.
It was more like 'be' in front of people, rather than 'performing'.
And she also did it in front of us.
So honest existence...

Her way of improvisation and also how she has found a way to do so are very unique.
I admire her work.

Twyla Tharp on Creativity, Failure, and Money

Do I really want to create dance for the sake of creating dance?

I don't think the passion towards creating dance cannot be 100% motivation to create dance.
Probably everyone wants recognition for what one has done.
And that's how we live in the society, isn't it?

But still it is so encouraging to see a famous choreographer talking about the honest passion.
Yes art starts from there...

I love these questions by Wendy Houstoun.
I admire her of being able to address her questions so clearly.
I love her trying to form this ‘conversation’ opportunity with different means, not only talking.
This is so inspiring!

Shame that I cannot make it for this.
I will be in Wolverhampton, performing with Stephanie Schober and Dance Company...

Music and Dance Improv performance at Cafe Oto

Hi everyone,

Hope you are well.

Next Saturday on 18th October
, I am taking part of a improvisation performance at Café Oto, 18-22 Ashwin Street, Dalston E8.

There will be a Butoh performance `Is My Body a Hotel?' by a dancer Joelle Gruenberg and a musician Melissa Castagnetto from 8pm (door opens at 7.30pm), then after that some musicians and dancers including myself will join them for a improvisation jam.

Café Oto is a relatively new venue which hosts mainly experimental and improvisation music. I am quite excited by this opportunity to perform with inspiring musicians and other dancers in an unusual environment for dancing. I have heard that other dancers will be more Butoh oriented, in which I am not particularly trained. I have not met most of them before and it will be a completely improvised performance. I am curious what will come up and I am sure that it will be something interesting.

The entrance for this performance at 8pm costs £5.

Here is the link for more detailed information.

http://www.cafeoto.co.uk/programme/ISMYBODYAHOTEL.shtm

I hope you find it interesting too and can make it for the performance.
It would be nice to have a nice drink with you after the performance...!

Best wishes,
Katsura

Independent Dance?

Move, move!

David Zambrano

Fragments video

'Fragments' is made in collaboration between Katsura Isobe, a dance artist, and Jairo Zaldua and Nicola Green, experimental printmakers. Originating from two short stories: 'The Yellow Wallpaper' by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and 'The Diary of a Madman' by Nikolai Gogol, Jairo and Nicola have created a series of prints that are variations and developments from a single picture of a girl. These are viewed as slide projections during the performance and also as a print out on a large transparent sheet. The artists have also played with the actual text from the stories, which have been taken apart and now deviate away from their original meanings. This is visible on the prints on the cylinder -shaped paper curtain as well as the paper strips worn by the performer. Katsura, the performer, is an inhabitant of the psycho-physical world created by Jairo and Nicola. The performance is about the journey towards an untouchable place, where the viewer sees only fragmentary things.

Hello Everyone,

I am performing with Stephanie Schober & Dance Company again on:

Tue 22nd July 2008
7.30pm
LABAN
www.laban.org

I will be performing a duet with the choreographer called "Catch", which we have been performing last two years and this will be the 14th performance in public.

I feel so much honour to perform the same piece so many times, and at the same time it is always difficult to keep it fresh and alive. I am planning to review all the small details of the movement in the piece so that I can find another meanings or narratives in it which reflects me at the moment rather than two years ago.

I attach the e-flyer that Stephanie made. Apparently she is teaching at the Place Summer School, so I will send the info too for your information.

I look forward to seeing you maybe at LABAN or elsewhere.

Best wishes,
Katsura

improvisation among dance people), so let's see what comes out from the
chemical reaction between you and me in the space. Please come and join us.

'Fragments' will be performed as part of Open Studios weekend. There will be
more to look around and it could be a fun experience, and more importantly
it's free!

Suna no Onna

Suna no Onna
(Woman in the Dunes)

is an experimental movement-based performance. It is inspired by a famous Japanese film Suna no Onna by Hiroshi Tesigawara.

We have virtual dunes environment, where the woman (me!) inhabits. In this extraordinary surroundings, the dunes creep into the woman's house, into her garments, and into her mind. Or perhaps the other way around- the woman manipulates the dunes, in order to capture the foreign man as her partner of her life.

The installation includes interactive video and animation, fashion design, electric music, and specially designed sensorial and interfacial garments, which respond to movement qualities, energies and emotional gesture.

Directed by Johannes Birringer and Michele Danjoux.

The work was originally commissioned by INTIMACY festival at Laban and Goldsmith College.

Revisiting Catch

STEPHANIE SCHOBER & DANCE COMPANY
BETWEEN SOUND AND SILENCE
TUESDAY 26- WEDNESDAY 27 FEBRUARY, 8PM
PURCELL ROOM, SOUTHBANK CENTRE, LONDON

Catch, this is the piece I have ever performed with the longest life. In contemporary dance, a piece does not have very long life. We create and rehearse a work spending a few month with lots of sweat, tears (sometimes) and definitely thoughts, then we get to perform it in front of the public once, or if you are lucky twice... I should be proud that we have performed this piece during the two seasons, probably this is the 12th and 13th performance. We have two days at Southbank Centre, this time. Unless you are in a big company, this is quite a record, I think! I have been saying that I am not as excited as a time we show a new work, but I should change my opinion. This is a new experience for me to perform a same work so many time for so long time. The first performance of Catch was May 2006. So nearly two years, we have been performing this. We have a performance booked at Laban in July, so it will be more than two years. Wow.
I feel easy about this piece. I don't think about it too much, I don't worry about it too much. I feel a bit bad about feeling easy, but probably that's what it is, to perform a same piece for a long time. I still enjoy performing this so much, and it is an interesting work. I hope my body, rather than my brain, remembers all the experiences with the piece, and it makes the performance richer. I just relax and let a miracle happen...

You'll never understand.

You'll never understand me.
You'll never understand my personal experience and its emotion.

That's what I am thinking somewhere in my mind, always.

But through art, can we connect to others? It would be different experience of events but maybe similar experience of emotions. Can we communicate to that bit, the emotion? If we human beings share a common ground somewhere down the base?

New Year 2008

It is a bit late but I wish you a very happy new year.

We were back in Japan for three weeks and just came back last Friday. The picture above is from a garden of an old temple in Kyoto (old capital), on which we can see the time and history indeed. The trip this time made me feel TIME, mainly my past, so much that it has been taking quite a few days to get myself together since I came back here. My toes are touching the ground but not heels yet.

However, there are a few things to get on with ahead of me, and let me use this opportunity to advertise my activities this and next month.

---

The first is an improvisation performance with an installation. My friends, Jairo and Nicola, are printmakers and exhibiting their work in an exhibition. I will be performing there only for the private view. I do not know the exact time of the performance.

Came and see this two-year-old piece Catch by Stephanie Schober. It will shape the evenings with newer two other pieces (picture above).
We have been touring in England since autumn, and finally, we are in London. I would love to have a lot of support there.

Dance is a lifestyle.

My dance teacher back in Japan, Fujisato-sensei, said "dance is a religion".

My Pilates teacher, Alan Herdman, said "Pilates is a lifestyle".

Last night, websurfing through Facebook groups, I found a group called DANCE is NOT a sport it is a LIFESTYLE!. Although I do not belong this group, this has brought back these words from my teachers.

Since I started teaching Pilates, I have been struggling to understand the value of dance, for myself.

In Pilates world, everything costs with one more extra zero. But (or because?) many people appreciate it so much. Through remedial Pilates, people can sort out backache, joints problems and muscular stain.

I can get regular and permanent jobs and income in Pilates, quite easily.
Whereas in dance, nothing is regular and permanent. We dancers move from one project to another, one audition to another, and then work very hard with their own body and mind, and get paid minimum or even no pay.

This does not make sense as a job.

But what I really appreciate being a dancer is that I can understand better and better about body, human and the society, by sensing, moving and thinking.

Miranda Tufnell, an artist who works with body, space and image, said in a workshop on Sunday two weeks ago, " We dancers are ambassadors of the body". There is lots of essence we see, and they are relevant to all the people.

So dance may be a religion. And definitely, dance is a lifestyle.

This makes me see other dancers in a morning class in a different way. They are no competitors but colleagues.

Perhaps, the same applies to other places too.
A first step towards world peace, or just being hypocritical?

Sixty-five Feet Down, feedbacks

It's already four months ago when I performed my work Sixty-five Feet Down at Clarence Mews. A good thing about this sharing was that I received written feedbacks from the audience, which can be nice but also confusing...and that's why I have kept them so quietly till now. But I want to do something. Something exciting in my dance activity and I thought it might be the time to see them again and see if I can take this work somewhere further. There are seven feedbacks.

1) I saw a woman alone, very troubled but I don't know why she was in this place. Thank you.

2) Isolated, alone, bare, raw, power.
Movements- sharp, fluid, intense, contained.
I enjoyed it.

3) I had a sense of confusion, as if she didn't know which way was up or down, like the sounds where playing or toying with her. If this was the intention then she captured it perfectly... The random echoing of the dunes seducing and then stashing her is quit succession. I enjoyed her quality of movement. Simple forms, but overly complex. Quite pure and clean. I really liked it.

4) I got the feeling of the dancer being very low, as described. The feel of isolation came across well. I would like to see more material, sequences and fluidity.

5) I only read the info on your piece after seeing it, so my impression works in a "funny" way. I definitely had the sense of pursuit/ being pursed, loneliness, being haunted, voice in the head... On empty landscape, lots of FRAGMENTS that get picked up or lost...burying one's head in the "sand"...

6) I have no idea what the dance was about- so that is my comment. If I knew I might be able to offer you some advice/ response. I also must add that abstraction is interesting if I can find what it is abstracted from -

I just find it very depressing to work on this piece because this woman is depressing. So I don't know if I want to continue to working on this, but it would be a bit shame to throw everything away after showing a work-in-progress only once.

Haw can I take it further???

Interaktionslabor, Germany 2

Two more days.

Now I can see the whole piece.
I know what I am doing in each scene.
The woman I am playing, still I don't like her but I've got her.

The process has been something interesting. We are dealing with interactive technology, and talking something about inter-subjectivity, communication, real or virtual etc. Cool.

OK then. Look at the process we have been going through for these two weeks. Everyone says that this is so precious opportunity to work with the numbers of experts in each art discipline. I would say this is the only occasion that everyone gets together except the actual show. It is true that we are spending quite many hours together to create something, but I doubt if things happened as much as this if we were communicating through the internet or emails.

Here is actual real interaction between people and their ideas. Each of us create something they want to try, put them together, select what works in the performance context. As we do this process, there are other problems on another level coming up. For example, how we can reach an agreement on the treatment of movie we made for a love scene, which contains some nudity that performers do not wish to show (yeah I'm one of them). We have a discussion about it. This is not directly related to the creation itself and maybe the discussion does not reach to a clear conclusion. But what I see is that the activity of discussion makes people communicate and it gives some good affect on the creation of a collaborative work. Lots of try-out and discussion work in that way. They don't bring conclusions most of time but it works as oil or spring board for the creation.

The oil and the spring board make the richness of a performance. I tend to rush into a conclusion, or try to get a result quickly, but I have to remind myself that nothing is waste. They are fertilizer and we don't know what kind of flower is coming out from there, and when.

On the other hand, there is a danger of just thinking anything goes. Like everything, the balance is important. Playing and planning. Planning and playing.

Going back to the interaction, so, the actual meeting and interaction of people bring infinite possibilities. In the chaos of unreasonable humans (yes they are), a sparkling jewel jumps out.

Communication on the internet has different quality. I remember this man, who could tell me so much about his personal things like what happened in the past and what's going on in his life, however, could not tell me anything face-to-face. The personal private intimate communication on emails is also a particular art, that cannot exist in the reality.

I am writing this, and I never talk anything like this to people.

Is this just my lack of ability of talking, or the nature of a blog?

...Probably both.

Interaktionslabor, Germany

I am here in Gottelborn, Germany for Interaktionslabor. Interaktionslabor is an annual workshop for technology and performance. I came here two years ago too. This time, I am working with a group of 15 people(!) with different expertise such as fashion, textile, animation, motion graphics, music and performance. Suna no Onna is the title of the physical theatre we are making, which is based on a Japanese novel of the same title, the Woman in the Dunes in English. I am playing the role of the woman who lives deep in the dunes.

This novel can be described surreal, but to be honest, quite depressing. There are no one who I feel attracted in the story, and this woman is one of those types who I would avoid. Someone who does not question about their circumstances. She just accept and get on with it. (you probably want to know why she lives in the dunes, which no one knows including herself!).She does not show emotions, and waits and waits to get something she wants, for example a man. I almost disgust this woman. I cannot deny that there is some part of me like her. Is this typical nature of Japanese woman? Maybe ones in older generation? I have felt same irritation towards my mother before- why she cannot change the situation if she does not like it? Why she even does not make any struggle and just accept it?

Olu, a performer who plays the man who gets trapped by the woman, said "this woman is quite Zen, isn't she?". Ah, yes, you can say that. I like Zen generally. There is particular minimalistic beauty of being. I have studied a bit about Zen for my choreography several years ago, and I found that the key of Zen is acceptance. Rather than fighting against things and people you have, just accept them. OK, so this is what the woman is doing. Well, then I saw the negative side of Zen. I may not like it any longer.

But still, I have to work on the character since I have to perform her. This is hard. The project is also hard because there are so many involved, and so many technology and aspects to deal with. Hopefully after this intensive nine day work, I can connect everything and integrate them with the character.

"You have to stand on your own leg to give your weight to the partner."
"Always being supported and supporting."

Words in Contact Improvisation

I went to a class, and it was contact improvisation (CI) with Rick Nodine.
As we do always in CI, we started working with a partner.

"You have to stand on your own leg to give your weight to the partner."
"Always being supported and supporting."

My mind immediately interpreted these words as something in life generally, beyond dance.

I love feeling something beyond dance through dance.

Dance is more than just dance.

Monologue on performance with technology

Easter is great. It gave me enough spare time and space in my mind to watch TV and search the internet.

I saw on TV about a multi-disciplinary group called Troika, who creates weird devices with technology that can interact with people and the society.

I am interested in a new way of presenting dance. Well, it does not need to be "dance"(what's dance anyway). Something to do with body, space, movement, people and the society. Something that suggests different ways of seeing, and can communicate with individuals.

One morning as I get up, I will have a super original idea for that!????

And this Troika seems something that feeds me some inspiration.

So I went to the website, and click, click, click... Once you start, you cannot stop following the links.

I have found this article on the magazine Icon.
digital poets

Quotes:

Now people are finally doing work where the expression is more important than the technology behind it.

“Interaction design is an approach – a process of designing relationships rather than things. It emerged from designing for electronic systems, but that thinking can be applied to all sorts of areas.”

As interaction design proliferates, there is also scepticism about some of the work being produced. “A few of these projects come from [a perspective of] ‘here’s a technology, so let’s see what we can do with it’ – rather than having a real question, desire or need,” says Loop.ph’s Mathias Gmachl. Others have pointed out the limits of work that is mostly experimental: “Many of these kind of provocative projects wouldn’t make it through as products,” remarks Jack Mama, creative director of Philips Design. “Elements get taken on and put into something else; the interesting thing is how they get translated, but they can get lost in translation.”

“It’s not really about solving a problem, it’s about solving a psychological need for poetry and inspiration,” he says. And this means thinking laterally about how we use the technology.

By appropriating illusion and narrative, designers are rediscovering modes of communication that have evolved over millennia. Products and buildings are being infused with the power of storytelling and dialogue. “The choice is between the familiar and the abstract; the practical task-based design versus an enjoyment of aesthetics that is closer to art,” says Moggridge. “Any product has to sit somewhere on that scale. It’s happening not because we didn’t always want it, but because it’s now much more possible. Because of the dispersal of technology you can make magic with almost anything.”

I have been working on performance with technology for four years, with five projects including two ongoing and one to come. These comments reflect so well what I have been thinking (Or do I just interpret in a way I wish because I already have some opinions?).

My big question is WHY TECHNOLOGY???
I keep asking this question as I work on a project.
It cannot be there just because it's cool.

What I want for performance with technology is.....
Maybe a unique poetry and inspiration?

Then aren't they anyway what a performance aims at?

Then can technology let a performance engage the audience more direct way?

But is that the way you want to go?

Glow, Woking Dance Festival (and some thoughts on myself)

I have been dancing professionally for 12 years, and for the first time, I have had a FULL TIME contract as a performer.

Such luxury life. Focusing on one project without bothering with other activities like taking classes, teaching etc. No need to rush between a few places either. A day can be as simple as this.

After four weeks of rehearsals, we just finished the performances yesterday.

Glow, Woking Dance Festival 2007
http://www.wokingdancefestival.co.uk/glow.htm

How strange that my fellow dancers who spent four weeks together go completely different ways from today. Or maybe the other way around. How strange that all these different people happen to meet and work together for a project.

It was quite unusual project for me to work with nine other dancers, as I tend to work much smaller numbers of dancers. The group was absolutely intriguing. Everyone has an original nature as a person, and unique way of working as a dancer. I was blown up. I am too quiet. I am too shy. I am too held back. I am thinking too much. I am too serious... All these negative feelings let me down, and anyway these feelings do not help me, so I fought back and kept myself up.

This is somehow familiar place to be. I used to have this struggle always, but since I left a college, I did not have much chance to be there. My mood goes up and down. I like challenging myself though. I make a little challenge like a kid, like "Today I try to say whatever comes up in my mind", or "Today I try to chat with people"...etc.

So on this personal sideway along the main way of the creation of the work, I have experienced a lot. And this is what I needed right now.

The month before this project, I had Pilates teaching 4-5 days a week. Six hours a day. Being a Pilates teacher, I feel like I need to be almost perfect person. We teach people with injuries or problems, and we are dealing with someone's body (and also mind). I am not supposed to be very emotional either. Neutral presence. That's what I am aiming for.

This attitude does not work as a dancer. A dancer needs to have more subjective view, which can bring the one's input in the creation.

How can I balance these two positions?

This is my current question.

A Craniosacral therapy session has given me a good idea for this (and probably this is not a usual reaction to the therapy). If I think the neutral presence in Pilates teaching as zero, it is not an ideal to stay at the zero point all the time though I was probably thinking that way. It is important to come back to zero sometimes to find a ground for myself, but the ground would become harder if I jump up and down or sift side to side widely.

So this is what I want to practise from now on, being back to my less exciting life... No, let's make it more exciting.

Glow 3

New Year 2007

Happy New Year 2007!

Looking back 2006, my major events were:

March- Performing in Beijing and Shanghai in China.
May and September- Wedding and moving house
August and onwards- Finishing Pilates teachner training course and getting a new job

Yes. It was full of events although I did not feel so. A slight feeling of the regular dance activities being taken over by change of my circumstances, supported by lack of luck for more dance oppotunities.

In the new year, I am going to focus more on dance. To begin with, I want to spend more time for some creative activity and want to be inspired. I need to be inspired constantly so that I can enjoy myself and appreciate the life more. For me, dance is like a window to look at other things happening around me. Probably because I have spent so much time to practise and think about dance, I often realise how things and facts are related by working on dance.

To be honest, having got regular and well-paid job as a Pialtes teacher, I have had a big question about my commitment on dance. How long can I keep going like this? Sometimes no work at all, and other times whip myself for too many works. Always less income than friends in other careers. Anyway what is dance? Why do I dance? Does anyone appreciate it at all? More and more questions.

After several months of this endless questioning, I realised that I miss dance. I can live without dance but my life is not as exciting as with dance. I have more appetite for knowledge or experience, with dance. As a person, I want to keep going forward, so my life is better with dance.

So that's why I want to spend more time on dance this year. I am going to start a personal exploration this month. Not aiming to produce something, just looking at details and finding some dialogs between my thoughts and my body... Step by step...
